Tree Care: Corffe House in North Devon

We were contacted by the owners of a luxury holiday home in North Devon, who were expressing concern about the health of a tree on their property and were after a tree care company to help them. The tree, a large Holm Oak, had previously dropped a large branch onto the garage roof causing a large amount of damage.

We visited the site and carried out an arboricultural tree survey. Unfortunately, we found a large amount of Bracket fungi, which causes decay and rot in the heartwood of the tree. These fungi cause weakening branches and, in some cases, cause trees to fall. There was also evidence of a Giant Polypore (Meripilus giganteus), which was of particular concern because it can cause extensive internal damage before any external evidence of its presence is noticed.

In this case we had to carry out a tree felling procedure, which involved the use of a 60 ton crane to lower the large limbs over the garage and safely to ground level, where the arisings were processed and taken off site. We had the North Devon weather against us that day, with wind and snow non stop but that didn’t stop us in successfully removing the tree and providing safety now for our client.
